Unit 5 - Lesson 31

Zander

3 Effective Sentences

Slide image

2

1) "No sooner... than"

  • We can use this to show immediate following of other parts in the sentence, so we only want to use it to emphasize something happened after.

  • This requires a helping verb "was, did, or had"

  • For example: No sooner had the fire started than the firefighters were here

3

Example

  • Convert: "When the rain started, I slipped."

  • 1) Add "No sooner" in the beginning: No sooner when the rain started, I slipped."

  • 2) Remove the adverb "when" and replace it with a helping verb: No sooner had the rain started, I slipped.

  • 3) Add "than" to the end of the clause: No sooner had the rain started than I slipped.

4

Multiple Choice

Pick the right conversion of:

"The owner forgot to feed his dog, so the dog became sad."

1

No sooner the owner forgot to feed his dog than the dog became sad

2

No sooner had the owner forgot to feed his dog than the dog became sad

5

2) "Not only... but also"

  • This is used to emphasize a certain idea

  • "Not only did Lina study, but also got an A+" is more forceful than "Lina did study, and got an A+."

6

Example

  • The phone was damaged and completely stopped working

  • Multiple ways to rewrite: 1) Adding "Not only" in the beginning, adding "was" after it, deleting the second "was", and replacing "and" with "but also": Not only was the phone damaged but also completely stopped working

  • Second Way: Adding "not only" after was and replacing "and" with but also." The phone was not only damaged but also completely stopped working

7

Open Ended

Rewrite:

The rabbit was running and hopping on one leg."

8

3) "The more... the more."

  • This shows the affect that one part of the sentence has on the other

  • For example: The more you learn the more opportunities open

  • This shows the affect of "you learn" on your "opportunities."

  • This structure doesn't not require "connecting" words

9

Example

  • "When I eat berries, I feel sick."

  • 1) Remove "when" and reword "I eat berries" so that berries is in front, and "I eat" follows it. Berries I eat, I feel sick / I eat berries, I feel sick

  • 2) Add "the more" before berries, reword "I feel sick" exactly as we did for "I eat berries" and add "the more" before it.

  • Result: The more berries I eat, the more sick I feel / The more I eat berriesa, the more I feel sick

10

Open Ended

Rewite:

Cycling has made me love summer

11

Recap

  • 1) "No sooner.. than" -> used to represent immediate action and requires helping verb

  • 2) "Not only ... but also" -> used to emphasize an action/idea and also requires a verb

  • 3) "The more... the more" -> Used to show affect of something on something else -> Sometimes rewording can be used to emphasize the direct object / subject complement.
