Saying where you went and how

Let's briefly revise how to build the PERFECT TENSE

The Perfect Tense (passé composé) is a compound tense as it consits of 2 parts:

- the auxiliary : AVOIR (to have) or ETRE (to be)

- the past participle : mangé, dormi, trouvé, resté, attendu

In French we use the verb AVOIR most of the time (see first lesson fo the term), but today we will focus on when we use ETRE instead.

Only 16 verbs form their perfect tense with ETRE instead of AVOIR.

They are mostly verbs of movement:

• arriver : to arrive - je suis arrivé : I arrived

• partir : to leave - je suis parti : I left

• rentrer : to get/go home - je suis rentré : I went home

• rester : to stay - je suis resté : I stayed

• sortir : to go out - je suis sorti : I went out

• tomber : to fall - je suis tombé : I fell

NOTE: with ETRE, the past participle agrees with who is doing the action:

• il est sorti : he went out (masculine)

• elle est sortie : she went out (feminine)

• nous sommes sortis : we went out (plural)

• If the person doing the action is male, we don't add anything

• If the person doing the action is female, we add an "e"

• If there are more than one person doing the action , we add an "s" or "es" if it is a group of girls

The verb "to GO" in the perfect tense:

• tu es allé(e) : you went

• il/elle est allé(e) : he/she went

• nous sommes allé(e)s : we went

• vous êtes allé(e)s : you all went

• ils/elles sont allé(e)s : they went

• NOTE: for "nous", "vous" and "ils" we add an "s" at the end of the past participle

We use "en" with all the means of transport that we get into!
