  • Canon: a collection or list of sacred books accepted as genuine. (from teh Greek: rule)

  •  Canon of Scripture: The official list of inspired books that appear in the Bible. The Catholic canon of Scripture includes 46 Old Testament books and 27 New Testament books.

  • Covenant: A sacred permanent bond of family relationship. God entered into a series of covenants with mankind throughout Salvation History to invite us to be part of His divine family and to prepare gradually and in stages and in words and deeds to receive the gift of salvation.

11

  • New Testament: second part of the Bible (27 books) that provides eyewitness accounts of the life of Christ and the beginnings of the Church.

  • Old Testament: first part of the Bible (46 books) that speaks of the deeds and words of God revealing Himself to His people in preparation for the sending of His son, Jesus.

  • Salvation History: The story of God’s love and mercy revealed to us throughout human history, culminating in Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross and Resurrection from the dead, which won for us salvation from sin and death.

12

  • Type: something/someone in the Old Testament that prefigures or foreshadows something or someone in the New Testament

  • Typology: The study of “types.” Typology studies how one thing leaves an imprint on a later thing in Salvation History. The earlier thing is a “type.” The study of types is most often considered in relation to Jesus Christ and the events of salvation.

John 1:10-14      Jesus, the Word of God and the light of the world.

[The Bible is placed in the place prepared for it. All bow deeply before the enthroned Bible.]

22

Leader:

We have heard your words, Jesus.

They give us joy and bring light and truth into our lives.

Your presence gives us peace in our troubled and divided world.

Let your Word create in our hearts a deep desire for you.

Be with us in our hearts and homes, in our community and country.

Give us your Holy Spirit to help us to understand your Word.

We enthrone now this Holy Bible in our midst.

Make your Word the center of our lives.

May your Word inspire all that we think and say and do.

May your Word bind us together in unity with each other and with you.

Today and forever.

       R.   Amen.

23

All join in saying the Lord's Prayer.

All repeat after the leader:

We promise to respect the Word of God in our midst.

We shall read and reflect on it as a family of God.

May we draw from it inspiration for our decisions,  strength for our work, and comfort in suffering. Jesus, help us to be faithful to our promise, you who live forever and ever.

Amen.

The celebration concludes with a sign of peace.

Understanding Covenants

order to understand the Bible more clearly we must understand what a covenant is. Covenant is the central theme throughout Scripture. It comes from the Latin word convenire, which means “to come together” or “to agree.” A covenant can be defined as a formal and solemn pact or agreement binding two or more parties to mutual responsibilities; an exchange of persons. A covenant is all about forging relationships and family bonds.

32

A covenant can sound a lot like a contract. However there are a few key differences between a contract and a covenant that are important to understand

33

Tell me what makes a covenant different from a contract?

35

Mutual exchange of Love

The point is that covenants are all about a mutual exchange of love between two parties.

36

Covenants...

  • contain a mediator

  • contain a promise

  • contain a sign

  • are made by swearing an oath, invoking blessings and curses on the person (curses if the covenant is not kept), and saying or performing ritual words and actions.

  • [Progression:

37

Six Major Covenants in Scripture

1) The Covenant with Adam.

2) The Covenant with Noah.

3) The Covenant with Abraham.

4) The Covenant with Moses.

5) The Covenant with David.

6) The New Covenant in Christ.

38

The Old and the New

  •  Jesus is the fulfillment of the law and the prophets. He came not to abolish the law but to fulfill it. In other words, the unity and connection between the Old and New Testaments is made evident by the Transfiguration.

  • St. Augustine said, “The New Testament is hidden in the Old, and the New Testament fulfills the Old.”

39

Applying Typology

A type in Scripture is a person or thing in the Old Testament that foreshadows a person or thing in the New Testament. Isaac is a type of Jesus Christ, and the Passover is a type of the Eucharist and the Crucifixion.
