Remember the goal

  • Our goal is to get the letter (variable)by itself

  • We use opposite operations to remove terms from the same side of the equation as the variable

  • Entire terms are added or subtracted

  • Coefficients of our variable are divided.

  • Today, we will deal with a variable on both sides of the equal sign.

3

Using opposite operations

  • 2x=-x+9 We can add x to both sides of the equal sign

  • 3x=9 then solve by dividing by 3

  • 2x - 12 = 24-2x first add 2x to both sides of the equal sign

  • 4x-12=24 now, add 12 to both sides of the equal sign

  • 4x=36 Then solve by dividing by 4

4

Multiple Choice

Solve for f:
f - 4 = 6f + 26
1
f = -5
2
f = 5
3
f = 6
4
f = -6

5

Poll

how do you feel about solving with variables on both sides of the equal sign?

I am ready for the next level of difficulty

I can do this but would like another example problem

I need another teacher led example

Let's put everything you know into 1 problem

  • What if we have x on both sides with distribution and combining like terms?

  • LET'S GO!!!
