Slide image

2

AFTER THIS LESSON, YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • Differentiate biotic from abiotic components of an ecosystem.

  • Describe the different ecological relationships found in an ecosystem.

  • Predict the effect of changes in one population on other populations in the ecosystems.

  • Predict the effect of changes in abiotic factors on the ecosystem.

DEFINITION OF TERMS:

  • ECOSYSTEM (noun)- The living things, the physical environment and the interactions among them.

  • PHOTOSYNTHESIS (noun)- The process of making food in plants by absorbing sunlight and water.

  • POPULATION (noun)- is a group of organisms, of the same species, which interbreed and live in the same area at the same time.

  • HABITAT (noun)-  place when organism lives

  • NICHE (noun)-  all interactions of an organism with the biotic and abiotic parts of its habitat.

15

3 COMPONENTS OF ECOSYSTEM

(Within a natural system, the transfer of energy causes the cycling of matter.)

  • AUTOTROPHS or PRODUCERS

  • HETEROTROPHS or CONSUMERS

  • ABIOTIC MATTER

16

BIOTIC VS ABIOTIC FACTORS

  • Biotic factors include all the living components of the ecosystem e.g. plants, animals etc.

  • Abiotic Factors include all the nonliving components of the ecosystem e.g. water, sunlight, wind

19

ABIOTIC FACTORS

The abiotic factors are grouped into 3 types

  • CLIMATIC FACTORS pertains to the factors in the environment that affect the weather (e.g. light, temperature, water and wind)

  • EDAPHIC factors pertain to the structure and composition of SOIL, as well as its physical and chemical properties (e.g. Soil texture, Soil pH and Humus Conteent)

  • PHYSIOGRAPHIC FACTORS pertain to the physical nature of land or its topography and location.

27

ECOLOGICAL RELATIONSHIPS AND INTERACTIONS

  • Competition increases when resources like food, habitat and water are in short supply. Some species have adaptations that reduce competition within a population.
