Annexation of Hawaii (1898)

Decades of intervention (trade, missionaries and Pearl Harbor) saw Hawaii increasingly 'reliant' on US intervention. ​

During instability under a new ruler, USA made Hawaii a protectorate in 1893, temporarily annexed in 1898 (supposed security concerns during the Spanish American war), and a permanent state in 1900. ​

Spanish American War (1898)

Sinking of US battleship in Havana - America intervened in the Cuban rebellion against Spanish rule. America beat Spain in 17 days and following the Treaty of Paris and Spain ceded Guam and Puerto Rico as well as selling the Philippines to America. America also occupied Cuba and helped end yellow fever.

Teller Amendment 1898

This made clar that America were NOT to annex Cuba but help them gain independence

American Phillippine War 1899

US troops were sent to the Phillippines to quell rebellion. Over 200,000 Filipinos died during the rebellion for independence. America occupied and 'Americanised' the counry - introducing the English language, a new system of governing, sent 8000 US teachers and ended the Catholic state religion.

International Mediation

1900 = Boxer Rebellion. American sent an international force to help keep 'open door trading' in China.

1905 = Russo-Japanese War. Roosevelt intervened to mediate between the two nations.

Platt Amendment 1901

An addition to the Teller Amendment, this placed 7 conditions for the withdrawal of US troops from Cuba. America took control of naval bases and also Guantanamo Bay.

Panama Canal 1903

America purchases unfinished canal from France and completes the project. Gives influence in Central America and shortens trade routes East to West (7500 sea miles between NY and SF)
