Prefix

  • A prefix is a word that is added to the beginning of a base wo

  • A prefix changes the meaning of the base word

  • Example: "un-" which means "not" can change the meaning of the base word, "used"

  • Used vs Unused

Root

  • A word root forms the basic part of the word and gives it its primary meaning.

  • If you know the meaning of a root, you can often figure out the meaning of the whole word.

  • Example "-lum-" is the root word for illuminate

  • "-lum-" means "light"

  • A suffix is a syllable of group of syllables added to the end of a base word"

  • The suffix changes the meaning and often the part of speech of the base word

  • Example "-less" which means "without" changes the meaning of the base word, "hope"
