Goals and Standard

  • Identify like terms

  • Use factoring to simplify linear expressions

  • 7.EE.1 Apply properties of operations as strategies to add, subtract, factor, and expand linear expressions with rational coefficients.

4

Identify Like Terms

  • Some terms have things in common. Like terms have the same variable and the same exponent. For example, the like terms   2x22x^2   and  3x23x^2   both contain   x2x^2   : the variable  x and the exponent 2. Like terms do not have to have the same coefficient.

Factor Linear Expressions

To factor a linear expression, look for factors that the terms have in common. For example, like terms have the same variable with the same exponent, which is a common factor for those terms. Different constants, and the coefficients of different variable terms, may also have a common factor.

8

Factor the expression:

 4xy + 6x4xy\ +\ 6x

  • Both 4xy and 6x contain the variable x with an exponent of 1.

  • Factors of 4: 1, 2, 4. Factors of 6: 1, 2, 3, 6. 2 is a common factor for the terms.

  •  2x (4xy2x+6x2x)2x\ \left(\frac{4xy}{2x}+\frac{6x}{2x}\right)

  • Simplify the expression.

  •  2x(2y + 3) 2x\left(2y\ +\ 3\right)\

9
