This lesson focus will be online success in college and universities, but even if you do not teach for a college or university, this information will be very helpful so stick around!

What determines if a student will be successful or not?

According to Ivan L, Harrel, in his article Increasing the Success of Online Students, the issue of student success in this environment has emerged as an area of concern.... retention rates--in many online courses is significantly lower than in similar traditional face-to-face courses. This is especially an issue of importance for community college faculty and administrators because institutions traditionally enroll greater numbers of nontraditional students and students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds than do four-year institutions.

Drop Rates of Online Learners

We might agree or disagree on the reasons for students success and failure but something we can't deny and overlook are studies. These Studies will help us understand better student retention before getting to know more about student success.

In the article "Factors Influencing Adult Learners' Decision to Drop Out or Persist in Online Learning", PArk and Choi found out the following :

  • Learners are more likely to decide to drop out when they are not getting organizational support for their learning.

  • Learners who perceive that the course is relevant to their job or life are less likely to make a decision to drop out.

There are many other variables including motivation , confidence and attention, as well as instructional strategies. In you opinion, does this study looks logical to you? Do you agree or disagree with the findings? What would you do to change these findings? Write a short paragraph to answer these questions.

Now let's look at the factors that influence student success

  • Some of this factors are normal things we might overlook such as:

  • age

  • gender

  • educational level

  • motivational beliefs

  • learning style

  • self-regulatory learning components

Which is the most influential for online success?

According to Yakselturk and Bulut in their article "Predictors for Student Success in an Online Course" self regulation is a significant factor affecting online success.

Therefore students should be directed to be self-regulated learners (metacognitively,motivationally, behaviorally active participants).
