A way to express numbers that are either too large or too small to be conveniently written in decimal form.
Example: 38,000,000,000 → 3.8×1010

Smaller numbers have negative exponents
Bigger numbers have positive exponents

The first number is a number greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10
