What is the smallest number when rounded to the nearest 100 would give 500?

• Since we want the smallest number, we want the number to be rounded UP to 500

• recall: What digit placing should we look at to round to nearest hundred???

• What is the smallest number that would allow us to round UP???

• To round to nearest hundred, we look at the TENS digit

• In order to round up, the smallest number is 5

• What about the ones digit???? Since the ones digit does not affect the rounding, we should select the smallest number, 0

• Ans: 450

What is the largest number when rounded to the nearest 100 would give 500?

• Since we want the largest number, we want the number to be rounded DOWN to 500

• recall: What digit placing should we look at to round to nearest hundred???

• What is the largest number that would allow us to round Down???

• To round to nearest hundred, we look at the TENS digit

• In order to round down, the largest number is 4

• Then is 540 the correct answer???

• Note that the ones digit would not affect the rounding so we should select the largest number , 9.

• Ans: 549
