Students will understand the colonization of Texas by discussing the establishment of Spanish Catholic missions in Texas. They will explain how the missions contributed to the patterns of Texas settlement and will analyze positive and negative consequences of the establishment of missions for American Indians in Texas

Week 12: Vocabulary

• Territory- An area of land under the jurisdiction of a ruler

• Palacios- A city in Texas near what is now Matagorda Bay

• Expedition- A voyage taken by a group of people with a purpose in mind

• Colony- A group of people living in a certain area

• Alonso De Leon- was explorer and governor, who led several expeditions into the area that is now northeastern Mexico and southern Texas
