How a building is made, depends on its purpose. For example, homes and schools are arranged in different ways for how people will use them.

To tell about a topic, author's must decide the best way to build ideas together. Like builders, authors arrange words in different ways for different purposes. We call these text structures.

  • Text structures describes the connections the between sentences and paragraphs

  • These connections are sequence, compare & contrast, cause & effect, problem & solution, and descriptions.

  • Each connection has clue words that help to us know which text structure is being used by the author.

  • Remember, clue words are only clues! To know for sure, ALWAYS look for how the connection is shown between sentences and paragraphs.
