Y9 Mount Merapi Lesson 2
Today we will...
Make predictions using data
Evaluate the methods of reducing the effects of volcanoes.
Answer an exam style question.
2
Multiple Select
At which two plate boundaries do volcanoes occur?
Constructive
Destructive
Conservative
3
Multiple Choice
What causes volcanoes at constructive plate boundaries?
Two plates come together, one is sub ducted underneath the other and turns into magma. This rises to the surface and erupts to form a volcano.
Two tectonic plates are moving apart, this causes magma to rise in the through the gap in the tectonic plates and erupt at the surface to form a volcano. When the lava cools it forms new land.
4
Multiple Choice
Where is our Volcano case study Mt Merapi located?
Phillipines
Iceland
Indonesia
Australia
5
Open Ended
Describe one positive of living near a volcano.
6
Open Ended
Describe one primary and secondary effect of living near a volcano.
7
Volcano Case Study: Mt Merapi, Indonesia.
Today we will...
Make predictions using data
Evaluate the methods of reducing the effects of volcanoes.
Answer an exam style question.
8
Open Ended
Recap: Describe the location of Mount Merapi. Using compass directions, including the continent, country, Island and type of plate boundary.
9
10
Multiple Select
Which of the following strategies of reducing the effects of volcanoes are classed as prediction?
Use earth banks to stop lava approaching
Monitor earthquake activity
Send early warning messages.
Measure water near the volcano to check for more gases in the water than usual
11
Multiple Select
Which of the following strategies of reducing the effects of volcanoes are classed as protection?
Use explosives to divert lava flow
Use satellites to detect temperature changes in the volcano
Use earth banks to stop lava from approaching homes
Evacuation Plans
12
Multiple Select
Which of the following strategies of reducing the effects of volcanoes are classed as planning?
Limit people building in certain areas
Use instruments to measure how much gas is coming out of the volcano
Use high tech equipment to check if the magma levels are rising.
Evacuation plans in the event of a predicted eruption
13
Can we accurately predict if an eruption is going to happen?
Can you be a volcanologist in the making?
14
15
How does a Volcano Change Shape?
- Pressure builds up in the magma chamber
- Forces the sides of the volcano to expand
- Scientists use satelites to check the shape changes from space.
16
Skip forward 20years from now, and you are working as a Volcanologist in Indonesia. It is your job to protect the people living near the volcano. Can you predict how the volcanic will erupt, can you save the local population?
17
18
19
Multiple Choice
Using the data we have just explored, what kind of eruption do you predict will happen? How would you advise the mayor to act?
Do nothing
Advise the Mayor that the people living in Sleman village must be evacuated
Advise the Mayor that the volcano will erupt, but it will not damage any towns
Advise the Mayor that the all people living in Sleman region must be evacuated
20
Small Eruption
If you selected - Advise the Mayor that the volcano will erupt, but it will not damage any towns - WELL DONE!!
The eruption did not damage any major towns, but two tourists who did not listen to the Mayors warnings had to be rescued

24
Large Eruption
if you selected - Advise the Mayor that everyone in the Sleman Region needs to be evacuated - WELL DONE, you have just saved thousands of lives!!
The violent eruption casued huge amounts of damaged many of the major towns in the as hot rocks and thick ash clouds rained down on the area. Lava flowed down drom the volcano destroying everything in its path.
25
26
Poll
Which method of protection do you think is the most effective.
Use explosives to divert lava
Build earth banks to stop lava from getting to buildings
Design strong buildings
Spray water to cool the lava
27
Open Ended
For the method you chose in the previous question, explain your reasons for why you believe it would be the most effective method. (Explosives, earthbanks, water, design strong buildings)
28
29
Poll
Which method of planning do you think is the most effective.
Evacuation plans
Exclusion and safe zones set up
Volcano drills to prepare people for what to do when an eruption happens
Early warning through good communication methods
30
Open Ended
For the method you chose in the previous question, explain your reasons for why you believe it would be the most effective planning method. (Evacuation, exclusion and safe zones, eruption drills, communication)

Now it is time to have a go at an exam style question :-)
I have shared a google document with you in the classroom, can you please go and open then, and spend the rest of the lesson writing a response to this question.
