2

Objectives

  • List the characteristics all living things share

  • Explain where living things come from

  • Identify what all living things need to survive

3

What Are the Characteristics All Living Things Share?

Let's find out some of these characteristics. Read page 5 to 7. Underline the main ideas.

4

All Living Things

  • have cellular organization (unicellular or multicellular)

  • contain similar chemicals (the most abundant one: water, but also carbohydrates and nucleic acids)

  • use energy (they do it in a combination of chemical reactions called metabolism)

  • respond to their surroundings (in two steps: stimulus (change in the surroundings) and response (action or change in the behavior))

  • grow (become larger) and develop (become complex during the organism's life)

  • reproduce (living things reproduce sexually (which involves 2 parents and a combination in the DNA) and asexually (which involves one parent that produces identical offspring)
