What is Layout & Composition?
Layout refers to the way in which we arrange the elements on a page which makes up the content of a design. The aim of layout is both to convey the message correctly and to present information in a logical, coherent way making the important elements stand out.
9
What is Layout & Composition?
Composition is the arrangement or placement of visual elements in a piece of artwork. You might consider this exactly the same as the “layout” of a piece(a term you hear a lot in graphic design). Composition is essentially the same thing.
10
What is Layout & Composition?
Composition is when the arrangement or placement of visual elements in a piece of artwork. You may consider this exactly the same as "layout" of a piece(a term you hear a lot in Graphic Design). Composition is essentially the same thing.
11
The Four Basic Principles
The key to mastering layout and composition is to think like a designer. Luckily, it's easier than it sounds. There are four basic principles that can help you transform your work and sharpen your eye for design. Keep them in mind during your next project, and look for ways to apply them.
12
Multiple Choice
What is Layout?
the arrangement or placement of visual elements in a piece of artwork
the way in which we arrange the elements on a page which makes up the content of a design
the elements that are closer together are perceived to be more related than elements that are farther apart

Multiple Select
Choose the 4 principles of design that we just talked about.
Proximity
Alignment
Color
Contrast
Repetition
15
16
PROXIMITY
The principle of Proximity is when the elements that are closer together are perceived to be more related than elements that are farther apart.
Proximity helps us organize objects by their relatedness to other objects. Proximity is the strongest principle for indicating relatedness of objects, helping us understand and organize information faster and more efficiently.
17
Proximity's Relationships with Connections
Proximity can create relationships between visual elements in a composition, create relevance, hierarchy; create organization and structure.
Proximity can also be used to suggest no relationship between elements, to break organization and structure.
18
Multiple Choice
What is Proximity?
the placement of visual elements so they line up in a composition
the elements that are closer together are perceived to be more related than elements that are farther apart
a reminder that every project should have a consistent look and feel

Alignment
23
ALIGNMENT
Alignment is the placement of visual elements so they line up in a composition.
In design, we use alignment to organize elements, to group elements, to create balance, to create structure, to create connections between elements, to create a sharp and clear outcome.
24
Two alignment principles:
Edge alignment
Center alignment
25
In design, one should try and avoid the appearance of having made arbitrary decisions. When visual elements are out of alignment, it is noticeable, and can devalue a piece of work if done unintentionally.
26
Multiple Choice
What is Alignment?
one item is different from another
reminder that every project should have a consistent look and feel
the placement of visual elements so they line up in a composition
27
Multiple Select
What are the 2 types of alignment principles?
Only choose 2
Internal alignment
Central alignment
Edge alignment
Serious alignment
28
29
CONTRAST
Contrast simply means that one item is different from another. In layout and composition, contrast can help you do many things, like catch the reader's eye, create emphasis, or call attention to something important.
30
Contrast - 2 Purposes
The first purpose is to create a point of interest on the page. If a page is interesting to look at, it is more likely to be read.
The second purpose is to organize information.

32
Multiple Choice
Contrast has 2 purposes, one is to organize information, what is the other one?
Have elements line up together.
Create a point of interest on the page.
Communicate what will be set up on the right.
33
34
REPETITION
Repetition is a reminder that every project should have a consistent look and feel. This means finding ways to reinforce your design by repeating or echoing certain elements.
35
The ultimate goal is to make an impression.
It could be said that repetition in design is a type of brainwashing. The more we see of something the more we familiarize with it, thus remember it. Whether we like it or not, repetition is impressionable. It’s human nature to find comfort and attraction to familiarity.
36
Multiple Choice
What is Repetition
the elements that are closer together are perceived to be more related than elements that are farther apart
