Gerunds

Gerunds are formed with -ing from the past participle of the verb.

They function as a subject, object, and object of prepositions.

Gerunds adalah sebuah kata kerja yang diberi akhiran -ing.

Gerunds dalam bahasa Inggris dipakai untuk menunjukkan bahwa kata kerja tidak hanya sebagai predikat. Gerunds dapat berfungsi sebagai subjek, objek, dan objek preposisi.

as subject

For example:

Reading is my favorite hobby.

Reading adalah contoh gerund. Read + ing.

Reading pada kalimat di atas fungsinya sebagai Subjek. Ada di awal kalimat.

as object

For example:

I love reading

Reading adalah contoh gerund.

Read + ing

Reading pada kalimat di atas fungsinya sebagai objek. Setelah kata kerja 'love'. Biasanya di akhir kalimat.

as object of a preposition

For example:

I'm thinking about becoming a librarian.

Becoming adalah contoh gerund.

become + ing

becoming pada kalimat di atas fungsinya sebagai objek preposisi. Setelah preposisi 'thinking about'.

When a verb become a gerund?

Kapan sebuah kata kerja bisa jadi gerund?

Kapan kata kerja harus ditambah dengan -ing?

Gerund can be formed if they are followed by

• verbs

• expressions

Verbs

• like

• love

• enjoy

Expressions:

• excited about

• good at

• interested in

• worried about

So, if you find the verbs and expressions, you have to use gerund

Jika bertemu dengan kata kerja like, love, enjoy maka kata kerjanya ditambah dengan -ing
