Alien and Seditions Acts

• passed to silence John Adams' critics

• tageted "aliens" who were not citizens

• gave the president the power to arrest adn deport aliens

• outlawed sedition - this is the stirring up rebellion against a governement.

• 10 democrat-Republican newspare editors were convicted

• Federalists limited free speech

Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions

• states have rights the government cannot take away

• nullification- the states can nullify any act Congress passes that is unconstitutional

• When the Democratic-republicans gained control of Congress they reversed the Alien and Sedition Act

The Jefferson Era

• 1800- Thomas Jefferson becomes president

• 1803- the US purchases the Louisiana Territory

• 1803- Marbury V. Madison affirms the Supreme court's power of Judcial review

• 1804- Lewis and Clark explore the Louisiana Territory-- expands knowledge of the American West

• 1812- War of 1812 begins--strengthens American patriotism

• In response, Jefferson & Congress pass Embargo Act of 1807

• This forbade American ships fromsailing to foreign ports

Tready of Fort Wayne

• William Henry Harrison, governor of Indiana territroy signed tready that allowed him to purchase 3million acres of land

• Tecumseh declared tready void because the Shawnee did not agree to the sell.

• 1811, Harrison's forces defeate the Shawnee

• Canada welcomed Tecumseh and supported teh Shawnee

The War of 1812-

• 1812, President James Madison declared war on the British

• Phase 1- Britian was still fighting France, so America was able to win victories and boost American confidence

• by 1813, the British threat had dwindled in the Northwest.

• then attacked Fort McHenry--

• America defeated British troops invading from Canada

• Jan, 8, 1815, the Tready of Ghent was signed and ended the war.
