DNA mutations notes MHS Douglas
2
3
Mutations happen when DNA is altered
A mutation can be harmless, beneficial or harmful. Many mutations go unnoticed due to their benign nature; however those we notice often create radical results.
4
5
Multiple Choice
a mutation of DNA changes gene function. What is the basic function of DNA
transcribed to create sugars
transcribed to create protiens
transcribed to create oxygen
to make more cells
6
Mutations which alter the structure of a protein so
that it doesn't function correctly can dramatically change a persons life
Cystic fibrosis causes a decrease in lung function and pancreas.
Sickle cell anemia makes the blood cells sickle shaped instead of round
7
Multiple Select
Remember that proteins are the building blocks of structures in the body. If the structure is wrong: choose multiple
the cells may look different
the cells may function differently
the cells may not function at all
the cells may die
8
9
Multiple Choice
In the case of gene deletion CCR5 , how did this change affect people
Increased their death rate
decreased their life span
made them less likely to catch some virus/disease
no effect
10
11
Multiple Select
If a single nucleotide changes, the outcoming
protein chosen by tRNA differs
protein is the same
cell dies
12
13
Multiple Choice
if a gene sequence is deleted then the mRNA for that gene
doesn't exist
doesn't know what to do
14
15
Multiple Choice
duplication of a gene makes
more of the same gene
no gene
fewer genes
16
17
Poll
when a gene is inverted it
flips over
disappears
is duplicated
18
19
Multiple Choice
a translocation is a shift in
where the gene shows up in the chromosome
just a few letters in the gene
the entire chromosome
20
21
Multiple Select
types of mutations include
translocation
deletion
inversion
duplication
22
Multiple Select
when a gene is completely missing it
duplicated
translocated
inverted
deleted
23
Multiple Select
when a gene is backwards or flipped it
deleted
duplicated
transcribed
inverted
24
Multiple Choice
mutations can be helpful to an organism and species
true
false
