VOCABULARY - Write in your journal PG #28

  • Classify - To sort or put things into groups based on similar and dissimilar physical, chemical, or biological characteristics.

  • Matter - anything that has volume and mass

  • Volume - the amount of space an object takes up. Measured in milliliters (mL)

  • Mass - the amount of how much matter is in an object, measured in grams (g)

  • Density - the amount of matter in a given space or volume

  • Displacement - a procedure used to measure the volume of a solid object by placing it in a known amount of liquid, like water, and finding the difference in the liquid volume measurements before and after the object is added.

  • Physical Property - A characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the substance.

THINK!

  • Do you know how to tell if gold is “real or if it is something else such as “fool’s gold?

  • Many jewelry stores in the U.S. sell fool’s gold as real gold.

  • One method of determining real gold from something else is to know its density.

  • The density of real gold is 19.3 g/cm3.

  • We can test to see if gold id real by using the displacement method from your vocabulary.
