Context Clues

  • When you don't know what a word means, look for words or phrases nearby

  • CONTEXT CLUES are words and phrases around the unknown word that gives an idea of what the word might mean.

The hippo is alarmed because of all the people around it. The phrases, "human commotion" and "crowds of people" tell me the reason the hippo was alarmed. "Broke through their nets" and "escaped" tell me what the hippo did from being alarmed.
