Repaso de Los IOPs

2
We have reviewed
Direct Object Pronouns
(what or who receives the action)
3
Hoy, we'll be looking at
Indirect Object Pronouns/IOPs
4
Most of you had some information about IOPs in Spanish 2, however, there is not a colored piece of paper that goes with it.
5
You may have notes from Spanish 2 to reference for this lesson, otherwise, take some notes as we go
6
Let's start with the reminder of how the Indirect Object functions in a sentence
7
The job of the Indirect Object is to say WHO benefits from an action or
to whom/for whom an action is done
an IOP is almost always a person
8
For example in English:
I give the scissors to José.
9
"I give" is still our subject/verb
10
What do I give?
scissors
that is the direct object
(what you have already practiced)
11
To whom do I give the scissors? OR
Who benefits from my action?
JOSÉ
he is the INDIRECT OBJECT
12
Indirect Objects can be replaced by Indirect Object Pronouns
13
Here are the Indirect Object Pronouns:
notice how similar they are to DOPs
14
me, te, nos, os are still the same
they are only different are in the 3rd row
with simply LE and LES
no more worrying about masc/fem
15
And just like DOPs, IOPs go before the conjugated verb
16
Let's try a few:
17
Multiple Choice
Choose the Spanish IOP that would represent the indirect object from the English sentence:
I'm giving them a lot of homework.
me
te
le
les
18
LES is correct
I am giving is the subject/verb
a lot of homework is the direct object
THEM is the indirect object
19
Multiple Choice
You should buy her a car.
le
te
les
me
20
LE is correct
You should buy is the subject/verb
a car is the direct object
her is the indirect object
21
Multiple Choice
They buy us dinner every Saturday.
22
NOS is correct
They buy is the subject/verb
dinner is the direct object
us is the indirect object
23
Now try a few looking at the Spanish sentence and choosing the best English equivalent.
Remember to look at how the verb is conjugated so you know who is performing the action (subject) as opposed to who is benefitting from the action (indirect object)
24
Multiple Choice
Choose the correct translation.
La profesora nos explica la lección.
The teacher explains the lesson.
The teacher explains the lesson to us.
We explain the lesson to the teacher.
25
Multiple Choice
Te pido el dinero.
You ask for the money.
I ask for the money.
I ask you for the money.
26
Did you pay attention to PIDO to know that I had to be doing the action?
27
Multiple Choice
Me preguntas.
28
Notice it was Me preguntas
That verb conjugation tells me that YOU are doing the action
29
IOP sentences very frequently have an "a clarifier" statement attached to them.
These phrases can be there both to clarify (especially for 3rd person) as well as to add emphasis
30
Take a look at the "a clarifier" statements

31
Having these clarifiers can help a lot when you need to fill in an IOP.
Try a few.
32
Multiple Choice
A nosotros
33
Multiple Choice
A ellos
34
Multiple Choice
Choose the IOP that would represent the following people:
A Ud.
me
te
les
le
35
Multiple Choice
A ti
36
Multiple Choice
Choose the IOP that would represent the following people:
A Uds.
os
nos
les
le
37

38
Multiple Choice

39
Multiple Choice
Complete with the correct indirect object pronoun.
Mi padre _____ compra un regalo a mi madre.
la
le
me
40
Did I trick you on that last one?
If you chose "la" instead of "le" for
"a mi madre", remember la is a DOP and le is an IOP
41
Multiple Choice
Ellos _______ dicen la verdad a nosotros.
nos
les
le
42
Multiple Choice

El piloto __________ habla a los pasajeros.

44
Multiple Choice
Restate with correct IOP in correct location:
Yo doy mi bicicleta a mi amigo.
Yo me doy mi bicicleta.
Yo te doy mi bicicleta.

45
Keep in mind that "a mi amigo" is the hint for LE.
We don't want to match the YO (subject)
46
Multiple Choice
Restate with correct IOP in correct location:
La profesora habla por teléfono a ustedes
La profesora nos habla por teléfono.
La profesora les habla por teléfono.
La profesora le habla por teléfono.

47
Next, let's try a few translations.
Remember to look at the conjugated verb for help knowing who is the subject
48
Multiple Choice
Choose the correct translation.
Les traigo los abrigos a ustedes.
You all are bringing the coats to me.
I am bringing the coats to him.
I am bringing the coats to you all
49
Multiple Choice
Choose the best translation:
My dad irons the clothes for my brothers.
Mi padre les plancha la ropa a mis hermanos.
Mis hermanos le plancha la ropa a mi padre.
Mi padre plancha la ropa.
Mi padre nos plancha la ropa a mis hermanos.
50
Finally, IOPs can also switch places in the sentence if there is a double verb situation or the present progressive
51
Remember that with a double verb, the IOP can still be before the conjugated verb or it can go after and attached to the infinitive
52
Yo te tengo que decir mi secreto.
Yo tengo que decirte mi secreto.
53
With the present progressive, the IOP can go before ESTAR (conjugated) or after and attached to the participle (~ando/~iendo)
54
Ella me está ayudando con la tarea.
Ella está ayudándome con la tarea.
55
Try a couple more with double verbs and present progressive
56

Vamos a invitar a ellos
(we are going to invite them)
Vamos a invitarles
Nos vamos a invitar
Vamos les a invitar

60
