What is a "helping verb?"

  • A helping verb (also called an "auxiliary verb") adds meaning to another verb.

  • There are many helping verbs. In English, a few examples are: Need, Can, Want, Should, Might.

  • In a sentence, helping verbs are conjugated, while the verb that they are helping is left in the infinitive.

Helping Verbs - In Spanish

Helping verbs in Spanish work the same way. When we use one, we conjugate the helping verb to the subject and leave the verb that it is helping in the infinitive.

  • I should eat more vegetables.

  • I should eat more vegetables.

  • We first need to conjugate the verb "deber" so it means "I should." In Spanish "I" is "Yo," and verbs with an -er ending like "deber" use the "-o" ending with "yo" conjugations: Yo debo.

  • Now we will put the infinitive (unconjugated form) of the verb that comes after: comer

  • Yo debo comer...
