Prepositional Phrases

• Modify a noun or pronoun by telling what kind or which one (also an adjective phrase)

• Modify a verb, adverb, or adjective by telling where, in what manner, or to what extent (also an adverb phrase)

• Always start with a preposition

• about, above, across, after, along, among, around, at, before, beside, between, against, within, without, beneath, through, during, under, in, into, over, of, off, to, toward, up, on, near, for, from, except, by, with, behind, below, down

Examples of Prepositional Phrases

• The banker with the red face nervously counted the money. (the noun, banker, is being modified)

• Those by the door are packaged and ready to ship. (the pronoun, those, is being modified)

• We raced toward the door when the bell rang. (the verb, raced, is being modified)

• I am very energetic without drinking coffee or tea. (the adjective, energetic, is being modified)

• I walked carefully near the fragile house of cards. (the adverb, carefully, is being modified).
