Zdania w stronie czynnej (active) zaczynają się od wykonawcy czynności:
Leonardo da Vinci painted Mona Lisa.

Zdania w stronie biernej (passive) zaczynają się od przedmiotu/osoby, która podlega danej czynności, ale NIE jest jej wykonawcą. Aby wskazać wykonawcę, możemy użyć BY (aby podkreślić, że wykonawca czynności jest ważny w danym kontekście):
Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo da Vinci.
