How were Connecticut and Rhode Island established?

Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay were the first colonies in New England that lasted. There were other successful New England Colonies, but the people who settled them had moved on.

The Puritans came to New England to practice their religion freely. But they did not usually approve of different religions inside their communities. The Puritan church established strict rules of behavior. All colonists had to follow them. Anyone who did not could be punished. They could be put into the stocks or branded like cattle. They could be sent away forever, or even killed!

Connecticut

The name Connecticut is taken from the Algonquian word Quinnetukut. It means “at the long tidal river.” The colony of Connecticut formed around the Connecticut River. Today this area forms the border between Vermont and New Hampshire. In the early 1630s, English colonists began to settle small farms and trading posts near this river. They also lived near the smaller rivers and streams that flow into it.

Thomas Hooker was one of many colonists who settled in Connecticut. He settled there because he disagreed with the rigid and harsh religious rules of Massachusetts. Hooker believed strongly that people’s religious faith should not affect whether they are allowed to vote. Hooker and several followers moved to the new town of Hartford, Connecticut, in 1636.

Rhode Island

Roger Williams was the founder of Rhode Island. He had a long history of not agreeing with religious and government leaders. Williams was a Puritan who first came to Boston, Massachusetts, in 1631. He refused to serve as a minister in Boston because the church there had not cut ties with the Church of England. Further, Williams challenged the Massachusetts colonial laws. He thought they treated Native Americans unfairly. He also did not like the law that created a single religion for the colony.

In 1635, Williams was sent away from Massachusetts. He fled south to Narragansett Bay. There he made friends with the native people. He purchased land from them and began the Rhode Island colony.
