Poll

How confident are you with answering questions in relation to approaches for all 4 factors?

Not confident, need an in depth explanation.

I know a little but revising will help

I am comfortable with most but need help with answering exam style questions.

I am confident and exam ready.

3

Open Ended

Identify the approaches you have used to develop the physical factor. (2 Marks)

4

Open Ended

State the approaches you have used to develop the social factor. (3 Marks)

5

Open Ended

Name the approaches you have used to develop the Mental and Emotional factors. (2 Marks)

6

Physical Factor

  • When planning your PDP for the physical factor you will have included approaches that are appropriate for developing CRE.

  • What are the guidelines that you must apply/follow to ensure your PDP is successful in improving your fitness levels?

7

Open Ended

List all of the principles of training.

8

Open Ended

Describe how you would apply the principle of specificity to your PDP.

9

Open Ended

Describe how you would progressively overload your PDP?

10

Progressive Overload

  • Gradually increase the demands of training to avoid plateau

  • This can be done by altering the FREQUENCY, INTENSITY, TIME!

11

Open Ended

Give a description for what is meant when we discuss the frequency, intensity and time.

Example: Time - How long we train for

Use the same format as above to give a detailed description for frequency and intensity.

12

Open Ended

When selecting an approach to include in your PDP. What helps to determine whether the approaches you have selected are appropriate or not?

13

Approaches - Appropriate

  • Specific - to the factor you are focusing on, your development needs, your role within the activity

  • Realistic - in a training or performance context

  • Adaptable - can be simplified or overloaded to suit your performance/fitness levels

  • Recordable - diary entries, reflections, re-testing – to measure the effect of the approach on your performance

14

Open Ended

The mental and emotional factors are developed using the same approaches. Can you give a definition of what positive self talk is?

15

Positive Self Talk

  • Positive self-talk relates to the ability to overcome negative thoughts. Positive self-talk seeks to bring the positive out of the negative to help you do better next time a mistake/negative event happens. The statements you choose need to be realistic and believable, especially in low-confidence situations.

16

Open Ended

The mental and emotional factors are developed using the same approaches. Can you give a definition of what positive Mental Rehearsal is?

17

Mental Rehearsal

  • This is about creating a mental image or intention of what you want to happen. When you visualise, you are trying to picture the event as vividly as possible and then try to duplicate that. Your thoughts should always be positive and envisaging a positive and successful outcome.

18

Open Ended

What are some of the challenges you may face when trying to carry out Positive Self Talk?

19

Open Ended

What are some of the challenges you may face when trying to carry out Mental Rehearsal?

20

Challenges (Limitations)

  • Mind can wander

  • Needs to be developed over time

  • Requires effort, dedication and time

A quiet space is required to ensure emotional focus. This can be difficult with team-talks, changing room music, teammates chatting, crowd noises etc.

21

Open Ended

What are the benefits of using Mental Rehearsal?

22

Benf

  • It allows the athlete to familiarise with a competition site, a race course, a complex play pattern or routine etc.

  • It can reduce the pressure of competition meaning less mistakes will be made

  • It can motivate the athlete by recalling images of their goals for that session, or of success in a past competition or beating a competitor in competition

  • It can reduce negative thoughts by focusing on positive outcomes  If the athlete sees themselves performing skills correctly and successfully, it will increase confidence

23

Challenges (LIMITATIONS)

  • Performers may not give the approach sufficient time to practice it, resulting in limited development  Unless a performer is willing to challenge the thought process they go through when they make a mistake, then little or no progress will be made

  • Unless a performer is willing to challenge the thought process they go through when they make a mistake, then little or no progress will be made

  • Performers may find it embarrassing to say positive phrases about themselves, which can lead to little progression

24

Open Ended

What are the benefits of Positive Self Talk?

25

Benefits

  • The approach is versatile and can be done anywhere – not only in the training room, or game but also at home because no specialist equipment is required.

  • It gives you an opportunity to confront a situation in your head and deal with it appropriately before it happens

  • Can keep you focused on the ‘right’ things and control your feelings so that you have better responses to situations that occur during the game

26

Open Ended

How would you define a set play?

27

Set Plays

  • It is a pre-rehearsed and planned manoeuvre that is used to beat an opponent or score a point.  Set plays are repeated in training so that all players involved are aware of their responsibilities when the set play occurs in the game.

  • Examples

Corner in football, Throw in in football, Free kick in football

  • Examples

Centre pass in netball, Throw in basketball

28

Benefits

  • The practices are specific to the activity and can develop your chosen area of weaknesses e.g. team dynamics/roles & responsibilities

  • Everyone is clear about their role and what is happening.

  • Can perfect techniques and plan strategies that can be easily transferred into competitive situations – prepares me fully for most circumstances that may arise in my performance

  • Builds positive relationships.

29

Open Ended

Explain the benefits and limitations of an approach you used to develop the social factor. (1 mark)

30

Limitations of Set Plays

  • There may not be the same pressure as in a live/ real performance situation.

  • Players may feel ‘pigeon holed’ in terms of positions if team has dominant players who demand certain roles

  • Players may not be able to adapt to the game if the set play does not run exactly as it was practiced

  • Individual weaknesses causing set play to break down (poor skill level, height disadvantage, lack of speed etc.

31

Open Ended

Explain a limitation of an approach you have used to develop the social factor. (1 mark)

32

Communication drills

  • Communication drills are set up the same way a drill is set up to develop skills such as passing or shooting. The emphasis in these drills is to force the players to talk to each other.

Communication drills

Describe an approach you have used to develop the social factor. (4 marks)

34

Benefits of Communication Drills

  • They are game like drills involving sports equipment that can help to develop both physical and social factors at the same time

  • This allows the players to experiment with different types of communication to work out what works best

  • It improves the link between players so that in a real live situation the communication should be automatic

  • Can build a player’s confidence in communicating which is then transferred into the game

35

Open Ended

Explain a benefit of an approach you have used to develop the social factor. (1 mark)

36

Limitations of Communication Drills

  • The drills only rehearse parts of the performance and unless they are practices in conditioned games,

  • it is likely they will not be effective in pressure situations

  • Some players may not take the practice seriously and still do not communicate with team mates

  • Can be boring repeating the same thing, particularly if the drill is not challenging

37

Team Building Tasks/Activities

  • Building team dynamics refers to various activities known as team building tasks. These are used to motivate team members and increase the overall performance of a team.

  • Any team building task or activity can be used when describing this approach

38

Example: Hoop Maze

  • Place 9 hoops on the floor in the 3 lines of 3.

  • Number 8 players 1-8 and put them in a hoop in any order.

  • Players must communicate and work together to get themselves into numerical order

  • The first hoop (top left) must be free at the end

  • Players can only move up and down or side to side (no diagonals)

  • When the exercise is complete players must be in order 1-8 from the 2nd hoop onwards

39

Benefits of Team building activities

  • eam building activities are easy to set up and complete, and do not require a lot of equipment. This means they are an efficient use of time, and results and improvements can be seen quickly.

  • This approach allows a team to work together and get to know each other without the pressure of playing in a competitive game.

  • It allows players to understand their teammates personalities, and how these can be best applied when going into a competitive situation.

  • Everyone in the team is involved, so they feel included; this will boost confidence

40

Limitations

  • This will only have a positive impact if all players commit to the exercise.

  • Some teammates may feel that these exercises waste valuable time that could be spent training for a competitive game; this means that they become disengaged.

  • There is no pressure, so this approach does not reflect a game situation.

  • It is difficult to get any objective data (statistics) to see if improvements are taking place when using this approach.

41

Open Ended

In all of our PDP's you will need to make adaptations and changes to your PDP in particular to the approaches you are using. identify any changes you made to the approaches you used to develop the Mental, Emotional or Social factor.

Example Physical - Continuous Training - increase by 5 minutes every 2 weeks of PDP.

Emotional/Mental - Mental Rehearsal - Completed MR in the changing room before the game

Social - Added in PASSIVE defenders to the set play

Highlight as many as you can!

42

Learning Task

  • The task will be due on Wednesday 17th February.

  • This will be added into the assignment tab of the Teams page.
