Synthetic Division

 2x2+7x+9x+2\frac{2x^2+7x+9}{x+2}

Step 1:  Write the coefficients of the dividend 2, 7, 9.  In the top left corner write the value for the divisor (x - a), so a = -2.  Copy the coefficient in the dividend below the horizontal bar.

7

Synthetic Division (Cont)

 2x2+7x+9x+2\frac{2x^2+7x+9}{x+2}

Step 2:  Multiply the first coefficient by the divisor (2 (-2) =-4).  Write the product under the next coefficient.  (-4 goes under 7)

Repeat step 2 until all additions have been completed in all columns.

Synthetic Division (Cont)

 2x2+7x+9x+2\frac{2x^2+7x+9}{x+2}

Step 3: The quotient is represents by the numbers below the horizontal bar.  (2, 3 and 3).  The boxed number is the remainder, the others are the coefficients of the polynomial quotient in decresing degrees.
