CPD - What is it?

  • Mandatory training is what you're doing now. You must have it to be a support worker. It only lasts 1 or 2 years then you have to redo it. Get used to it. Nearly all employers will pay for the training, the certificate and give you the time to complete it.

  • Without it you cannot be a support worker.

  • You will have regular supervision with a senior staff member, thwey will review your performance, put support in place, provide you with targets and approve your probation period for the role, or not. Supervision is also regular and normal, so get used to that too.

Beyond mandatory

  • Set your sights beyond mandatory. Do you want to specialise in therapy, in teaching, in activity provision, in management?

  • Doing training in your own time at your own expense or with support, this is also CPD. This is what will set you apart, increase your job satisfaction and give you access to roles, responsibilities, opportunities and salaries beyond that of a support worker.
