Search is typically only limited to Tibet (there was one in Mongolia)
The Panchen Lama, with the Tibetan government and other High Lamas, watch for signs

Some signs/symbols of where the future Dalai Lama will be:
Visons/signs in meditation & dreams (by search team)
Signs from a holy lake in Tibet (vision about the direction of rebirth)
Color and/or direction of the smoke after Dalai Lama was cremated
Overall, child has to go through tests to be confirmed it is the DL reincarnated-remember, there should be some type of familiarity
Child is then taken to Lhasa to learn Buddhist ways (huge honor)

The current Dalai Lama ascension
Was born Tenzin Gyatso in 1935 to peasants in Tibet (86 years old)
Chosen at age 2; educated at age 6; took control at age 15
1950-He took power & China invaded Tibet
1951-Tibet was pressured into becoming part of China; they refused
1959-For fear of his life/losing control, he fled Tibet to live in India
China propaganda: Dalai Lama is a separatist, traitor for being anti-communist & pro self-rule & inciting a Tibetan rebellion

Tensions continue to rise...
In the early 1960's, the DL pushed for some level of autonomy
1980's-Tibet wanted full independence but compromised to a high level of autonomy
Early 1990's-Tibet set up an interim government to set up a new democratic constitution for their freedom from China
September 2001-Chairman of the Cabinet was elected & voted on a new cabinet to help rule-first time Tibet elected their officials
March 2011-Dalai Lama officially gives up any political power
This officially ended the 368 year tradition of the DL ruling both politically & spiritually-ONLY spiritual leader now
