Topics Covered

  • Identify measurements in the customary and metric systems

  • Equivalent Fractions

  • Addition and Subtraction of Fractions

  • Decomposing Fractions

  • Comparing Fractions

  • Input/Output Tables

3

Input/Output Tables

Let's refresh over the oldest first. These tables organize input/output data according to a given rule. Example X10.

4

Sample Question

What is our Rule? Look at the position and find what we are doing to get each value. Are we multiplying, dividing, adding, or subtracting? If we look at one value we could do two things. To get from 1 to 11 we could add 10 or multiply by 11. We must look at more to determine the rule.

Converting Fractions to Decimals and Back

When you say the name of some fraction it should remind you of decimals. For example 4/10 can also be written as 0.4 , Or 15/100 can also be written as 0.15 .

9

Multiple Choice

Which of the following fractions is the same as 0.45?

11

Comparing Fractions

The best way to compare fractions is to cross multiply. Remember our symbols Greater Than >, Less Than <, and Equal To =.

12

Sample Question

In our example, we first multiply 5 X 10, giving us 50 on the left. Then we multiply 8 X 6, giving us 48 on the right. 50 is more than 48. So, we use the greater than symbol. Remember the alligator wants the largest number for lunch!

16

Decomposing Fractions

To decompose is to break apart. So when we decompose a fraction we break it into its parts. There are multiply ways to break down fractions.

17

Sample Question

When we see this, we must first understand that each strip is 1 whole. Meaning you make your fractions using how many shaded in the 1st strip, over the total amount in that strip. So, 4/5 and 5/5, not 9/10.

20

Adding and Subtracting Fractions

The rule when adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator is to add/subtract the top but leave the bottom.

21

Sample Question

Add the numerators but just bring the denominator over.

22

Multiple Choice

Using that information, what is the correct answer?

1

2/4

2

2/8

3

5

Both 2/4 and 1/2

23

Sample Question

Add the numerators but just bring the denominator over. Then also remember to simplify.

Slide image

24

Simplifying Fractions

Sometimes when you find an answer it could be simplified into a smaller fraction. Just like 100/200, the numerator is half the value of the denominator so it can be simplified to 1/2. Not all are that simple.

30

Equivalent Fractions

Equivalent means equal. When you cross multiply to compare you will get the = symbol.

31

Sample Question

What you do to the numerator (top) you do to the denominator (bottom). So, whatever you do to the denominator you do to the numerator. Meaning if I have to multiply by 7 to find the new denominator, then you must multiply the numerator by 7 as well.
