What methods did Douglass take to learn to read and write?
Douglass would make friends with poor white boys and trade them bread for lessons in reading.
He learned to write through copying letters he saw in the ship yard. From there, he would slyly goad and challenge other boys who could write into showing him more letters, which he would memorize.
6
Put it all together
Now you have the information how can you put it all together in an ACE.
For the following slides, you are going to review student examples and find the parts of ACE that are there or are missing

Multiple Select
The main method Douglass used to learn how to read and write was to manipulate some of the kids in the neighborhood to teach him. One example of this is when he said things like "I could write as well as he"(Paragraph 11) it would rile up the kid who would then try to beat him and Douglass would learn the letters of the kids who would beat him. My evidence shows that when he would act like was better than another child the child would respond by beating him and showing him new letters. When that would happen Douglass would learn these new letters and slowly learned how to read.

Lead-in
Lead-in's are important since they give your reader context that evidence is coming up.
One example of this is when he said things like....
^^ This lets us know that there is some evidence coming up.

Citing evidence means it comes directly from the text.
Paraphrasing- put it in your own words without using the text directly
Direct Text- use exactly what comes from the text

Explain
Explain should ALWAYS come after the citation. It's the last part of the constructed response. It puts everything together and connects for the reader. Check out some sentence starters here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_oUP-nyId250IvLfrUnrLmRdyEYH2Mpd/view?usp=sharing
While I don't approve of the use of "my"- refrain from ANYTHING "I" related this is still a good explanation.
15
Poll
The methods that Douglas used to write was looking at the letters on timber and he would practice writing those letters and then he also tricked other people into writing in order to prove to Douglas that they are better but Douglas just learned from those people and he also learned with a copy-book which was the fence, brick walls, or pavement and he used chalk for a pen and ink.
Thumbs up if you think this is a great response. Thumbs down if it needs a little work.
16
100
That response got a 100. It had all the parts. It was in the required structure and was logical.
I don't agree with the "my" but it's not enough to dock too many points since it was a minor error.
17
Multiple Select
he became friends with white children and then he used them as teachers.
What does this constructed response need? Select all that apply.
Proper grammar
Restating the question
Evidence

Nothing

Reviewing ACE
If you said everything then you are correct.
Your constructed response needs to be properly punctuated (use periods, commas, capitalization, and correct homophones).
It also needs a restatement of the answer.
For the next question select the correct response option.
19
Multiple Choice
he became friends with white children and then he used them as teachers.
Select the correct answer from the choices below.
One of the methods Frederick Douglass used was to befriend white children and used them to learn how to read.
He used white children to read.
He became friends with white children and then he used them as teachers.
20
Don't!
Just say "he," "she," or any other pronouns in the first sentence. Be specific. People should not have to read the question to know what you are talking about.
21
Multiple Choice
One of the methods Frederick Douglass used was to befriend white children and use them to learn how to read.
Select the correct answer from the choices below to add in a lead-in.
An example of Douglass methods is when he...
This phrase is proof that...
It can be concluded that....
22
Do!
Reference the author again by their last name. Instead of saying "the author" use the author's LAST name.
On the next slide select the evidence that best supports "One of the methods Frederick Douglass used was to befriend white children and use them to learn how to read."
23
Multiple Choice
Which evidence supports: "One of the methods Frederick Douglass used was to befriend white children and use them to learn how to read"?
The plan which I adopted, and the one by which I was most successful, was that of making friends of all the little white boys whom I met in the street. As many of these as I could, I converted into teachers.
I was now about twelve years old, and the thought of being a slave for life began to bear heavily upon my heart.
The idea as to how I might learn to write was suggested to me by being in Durgin and Bailey's ship-yard, and frequently seeing the ship carpenters, after hewing, and getting a piece of timber ready for use, write on the timber the name of that part of the ship for which it was intended.
24
Do!
Select evidence that directly matches what you are claiming/saying.
The third piece of evidence does support the question but it does not support our answer that we went with.
25
Don't!
Try to use evidence that may be right but doesn't support your answer. You make yourself work harder that way.
Give more than 3 sentences of evidence. You are writing a short answer- they should be short.
Next, find the explanation that best connects the answer, lead-in, and evidence together.

Which from below is the best explanation?
As a result of Douglass's plan and actions he was able to learn how to read and become an incredibly important part of American History.
This proves he learned how to read.
I think this shows that Douglass was a hardworking man and deserved his freedom.
