What is a comparative?

  • We use it to compare a quality between two people, animals, things, or actions.

  • We use an adjective for the comparative

  • noun + adjective + noun

Types of comparative adjectives

  • (adjective) -er + than

  • Example: the mouse is smaller than the cat.

  • more + (adjective) + than

  • Example: This book is more expensive than the notebook.

  • We add "-er" for adjectives with 1 or 2 syllables.

  • Examples: tall, small, clever, old, young, short, fast, etc.

  • taller than, smaller than, cleverer than, older than, younger than, etc.

Adjectives with a final -y
