Active and Passive Voice

Voice

• Active voice: The subject performs the verb.

• Example: The zombies *ate* the carrots.

• Passive voice: The subject does not perform the verb.

• The carrots were eaten by the zombies. Who ate? The zombies (not the carrots).

Active/Passive Voice Hint

If you see the word "by" after the verb, it is often passive voice. Ask yourself if the word next to by is performing the verb.

Example: The squirrels were chased by the cat. (The verb is "were chased." Who chased? The cat, NOT squirrels, so it is passive voice.)
