Egypt has a rich history and culture dating back thousands of years, starting with the Pharaonic culture. Egypt is among the earliest civilizations. Egypt is among the earliest civilizations. Egyptian civilization developed along the Nile River in large part because the river’s annual flooding ensured reliable, rich soil for growing crops. The Egyptians kept written records using a writing system known as hieroglyphics. Egyptian rulers used the idea of divine kingship and constructed monumental architecture to demonstrate and maintain power. Ancient Egyptians developed wide-reaching trade networks along the Nile, in the Red Sea, and in the Near East.

The most famous Egyptian pyramids are those found at Giza, on the outskirts of Cairo. Several of the Giza pyramids are counted among the largest structures ever built. The Pyramid of Khufu is the largest Egyptian pyramid. It is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still in existence.
