  • used to evaluate student learning, skill acquisition and academic achievement at the end of a defined instructional period

  • example: end of a project, unit etc.

3 major criteria to be considered summative assessment

  • the tests, assignments or projects are used to determine whether students have learned what they were expected to learn

  • given at the conclusion of a unit, topic etc. to determine learning progress and achievement

  • recorded as scores or grades that are factored into a student's grade

Formative Assessment

  • formative assessment, formative evaluation, formative feedback, or assessment for learning, including diagnostic testing, is a range of formal and informal assessment procedures conducted by teachers during the learning process in order to modify teaching and learning activities to improve student attainment
