2

What are linking words?

We use linking words to join sentences together. Linking words can express purpose, result or contrast, etc.

3

Linking words for purpose

so that / in order to / because

- koristimo ove veznike za izražavanje svrhe, razloga zašto se nešto dešava

- koristimo veznik 'because' kada hoćemo da kažemo da se nešto dogodilo zbog nečeg drugog:

e.g. We didn't play football because it was raining.

Because it was raining, we didn't play football.

(Ovaj veznik se može koristiti u sredini rečenice ili na početku pre nekog razloga. Ako se koristi na početku rečenice, onda se dodaje zarez na sredini da odvoji deo rečenice od ostatka rečenice.)

e.g. He is learning English so that he could speak it with his customers.

I go to school in order to learn a lot.

4

Linking words for result

so

- koristimo 'so' kada izražavamo rezultat; koristi se u govornom engleskom jeziku u neformalnom izražavanju:

e.g. I was hungry, so I bought a sandwich.

5

Linking words for contrast

however / in spite of (despite) / although

- koristimo ove veznike kada povezujemo dve različite ideje (jedna je pozitivna, a druga negativna):

e.g. ALTHOUGH: Although the weather is bad, I will go for a walk.

I will go for a walk, although the weather is bad.

HOWEVER: I will go for a walk. However, the weather is bad.

I will go for a walk. The weather, however, is bad.

I will go for a walk. The weather is bad, however.

IN SPITE OF (DESPITE): I will go for a walk despite (in spite of) the bad weather.

Despite (In spite of) the bad weather, I will go for a walk.
