In this lesson, we will use key details from the story to describe
its structure and how the author sequences events. A story has
a beginning, middle, and an end. Events in the story take place
in a particular order.
3
Today, we
will learn how an author tells a story about a community garden
in a city neighborhood. We will pay attention to key words and

On page 140, how does the author help us picture what the block
looks like now that the building is gone?
9
She compares the block to a
smile: “Now this block looks like a big smile with one tooth missing.”
This helps us picture the gap that the missing building has created in
the block.

The community garden in City Green is a good thing in the neighborhood, and the community enjoys having it.In the beginning of the story, the empty lot makes Marcy sad. The other neighbors must not like the empty lot either because they all help clear it out and plant the garden. Even Marcy’s brother helps out. Old Man Hammer seems to be the only one who does not like the idea of a garden. In the end, though, even he plants sunflowers.
