2

Transformations- three types we will look at:

  • Translations-slides

  • Reflections- flips

  • Rotations-turns

3

Translation

When you "slide" a geometric shape from one location to another on a coordinate plane. it does not change its size or shape. It just moves locations!

4

Reflections

This is a flip over the x or y axis (this will be our focus) If it is drawn on a coordinate plane, you can count the distance and simply redraw it....but there are rules you can learn as well :)

5

Rules for Reflection

  • Identify the coordinates for the vertices of the original shape.

  • For the new shape: if it is "flipped over the x axis" keep the x coordinate and change the sign of the new y. If it is "flipped over the y coordinate" change the sign of the new x coordinate and keep the y.

6

Example of point reflection

  • Original figure (-5,3) If I reflect (flip) over the x axis my new coordinates are (-5, -3)

  • Original figure (-5,3) If I reflect (flip) over the y axis my new coordinates are (5,-3)

  • REMEMBER...whichever axis you REFLECT (FLIP) over...you keep that same coordinate and change the sign of the other coordinate.

Rotations

Rotation means to turn. We will focus clockwise...meaning turning to the right (counter clockwise means the shape turns to the left)

8

Rotations made easy

In order to do this, you will need graph paper. There are rules...which we will look at :)
