1. Apostrophe ' vs. Plural Review

  • Apostrophes

    We use apostrophes mainly for contractions or possession.

  • Contractions: Bringing two words together

  • Example: can't > can not, don't > do not, won't > will not, haven't > have not, couldn't > could not

  • Possession: When someone or something owns or is related to something or someone else.

  • Example: My sister's car (the car belongs to my sister), the dog's toy (the toy belongs to the dog), my brother's textbook (the textbook belongs to your brother)

Plural

  • We use apostrophes mainly for contractions or possession.

  • We use plural to show when there are more than one person or thing.

  • Example: I have three cousins. You ate ten oranges. We own four horses.

  • Verb Tense: The part of the verb that shows when something happened.

  • Example: He walked home. - Past tense

  • Next month, we will go to the new coffee shop. -both "next month" and "will" show future.

  • We swim every day after school. -"swim every day" shows that currently, they swim more than once, a repeated action.

  • Verb Tense Mistakes: If two verbs are in a sentence, their tense has to go together.

  • Correct: He walked home and then ate ice cream. - both walked and ate show past

  • Incorrect: He walks home and ate ice cream. -walks is present, but ate is past, so when did this happen?
