  • Choctaw were the first to be sent to the new Indian Territory and moved in the winter and many people died as a result

  • The Creek resisted and federal troops had to capture them and put them in chains to move them west to the Indian Territory

  • The Chickasaw lived in upper Mississippi and also lost many people

  • The Seminoles lived in Florida and fought to stay on their land. A second Seminole War was fought to capture them and force them to the new Indian Territory. Some Seminoles were never captured and stayed on Florida.

  • The Cherokee tried to sue the government to keep their land and won their U.S. Supreme Court case, but President Jackson would not enforce the ruling. Thousands of Cherokees died on the trail to the Indian Territory. This became known as the Trail of Tears.
