Rehabilitation Defined

  • Rehabilitation is treatment designed to facilitate the process of recovery from injury, illness, or disease to as normal a condition as possible.

  • Rehabilitation after illness or injury is a slow step-by-step process that aims to help patients recover.

  • Rehabilitation is care that can help patients get back, keep, or improve abilities needed for daily life.

  • These abilities may be physical, mental, and/or cognitive (thinking and learning).

Indications for Rehab

  • Some of the most common indications for rehab include:

  • Injuries and trauma, including burns, fractures (broken bones), traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injuries

  • Stroke

  • Chronic pain, including back and neck pain

  • Major surgery

  • Certain birth defects and genetic disorders

  • Severe infections

Goals of Rehab

  • The overall goal of rehabilitation is to help patients get their abilities back and regain their independence.

  • Specific goals will depend on the cause of the problem, whether the cause is acute or chronic, which abilities were lost, and the severity of the issue.

  • For example:

    A person who has had a stroke may need rehabilitation to be able to dress or bathe without assistance.

  • An active person who has had a heart attack may go through cardiac rehabilitation to try to return to exercise.

  • Someone with a lung disease may get pulmonary rehabilitation in order to be able to breathe better and improve their quality of life.

Components of Rehab

  • A variety of healthcare providers work to assess a patients needs, set goals, and create a treatment plan.

  • The types of treatments that may be in a treatment plan include:

  • Cognitive rehabilitation therapy to help patients relearn or improve skills such as thinking, learning, memory, planning, and decision making.

  • Nutritional counseling

  • Occupational therapy to help patients with daily activities

  • Physical therapy to help patients with strength, mobility, and fitness

  • Cardiac rehabilitation to help patients with heart issues

Rehabilitation Settings

  • Acute Care -is the setting for severe trauma patients who need the most intensive care.

  • Long-term Acute Care- is a facility for patients who require long-term hospitalization.

  • Home Health Care- involves therapists traveling to the patient’s homes.

  • Inpatient Care-is care that patients receive during or after a stay at the hospital.

  • Outpatient Care-occurs when patients are not admitted to the hospital.

  • Skilled Nursing Facility-is a specific branch of a hospital which provides around-the-clock medical assistance from nurses, as well as a variety of different therapists.

Careers in Rehab

  • Athletic Training-collaborate with doctors to provide emergency and follow-up care and develop injury prevention and treatment programs for injured athletes.

  • Physical Therapy-work with doctors to diagnose and identify problems, create plans of treatment and carry out therapy designed to help restore the patient's health and quality of life. 

  • Occupational Therapy-work with patients in order to return them to daily living and working routines following disabling health conditions.

  • Respiratory Therapy-under the direction of a physician, the respiratory therapist helps to evaluate, treat and rehabilitate patients suffering from respiratory disorders.
