Migratory Patterns

  • About 18,000 years ago, the Indigenous People began to migrate (move) from their original homes in Siberia (Asia) and moved over the BERING STRAIT and moved into Alaska.

  • Some tribes settled in North America while others continued down into Central America and South America.

Tribal settlements

  • The Aztecs settled in South Central Mexico

  • The Mayans settled mainly in Central America (Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador)

  • The Incas settled in Peru in South America

  • The Kalinagos and Tainos lived in Venezuela and Guyana before travelling north.

  • Between 2000 and 2500 years ago some groups (the Kalinagos and Tainos) travelled to Trinidad and Tobago from Venezuela.

  • The Kalinagos lived in the north and west of Trinidad

  • The indigenous people grew crops such as cassava, maize, tomatoes, potatoes, beans and fruits.

  • They also fished and hunted.

  • Cotton was grown to make clothes and bedding.

  • Tobacco was smoked and chewed.
