The Statue of Liberty stands in Upper New York Bay. She is a symbol of freedom, inspiration, and hope. It was 1865 when Frenchman Édouard de Laboulaye proposed the idea of presenting a monumental gift from the people of France to the people of the United States

In her raised right hand, the Statue of Liberty holds a torch. This represents the light that shows observers the path to freedom. In her left hand, she clutches a tablet bearing the Declaration of Independence's adoption date in Roman numerals.
