2

Transformations

  • Translation

  • Reflection

  • Rotation

3

Translation

  • "directed line segment"

  • also called "vector"

  • all points move the same distance in the same direction

4

Multiple Choice

In a translation, the preimage and image are ___________.

1

congruent

2

similar

3

different

4

none of the above

5

Reflection

  • must refer to the line of reflection

  • preserves distance and angle measure

  • does not preserve orientation (clockwise/counterclockwise)

  • any point ON the line of reflection will not move.

  • image and preimage are the same distance from the line of reflection

  • reflection line is the perpendicular bisector of the segment connecting each preimage and image

6

Multiple Choice

True or False: When a point is reflected across a line of symmetry, the line of reflection is perpendicular to the segment connecting preimage to image.

1

True

2

False

9

Multiple Choice

What is a reflection?

1

When you turn an object around a point.

2

When you slide an object form one place to another.

3

When you flip or mirror an object across a line.

4

When you resize an object.

10

Rotation

  • Center point that does not move in a rotation

  • angle measure tells how far the object is rotated about the center point

  • Direction tells whether the turn is clockwise or counterclockwise

  • all images will be located on the same circle with same center (center of the rotation)

  • rotations preserve distance, angle measure, and orientation

  • image and preimage are congruent

18

Reflection Symmetry

  • Lines of reflection must go through the center of the figure

  • All points on one side will line up with their corresponding point on the other side of the line

  • Regular polygons will have the same number of lines of reflections it has sides

  • When finding lines of reflections of figures, fill and shading will matter.

Rotation Symmetry

  • Center of rotation will be in the center of the figure

  • One rotation will take the figure onto itself in the smallest angle measure

  • Angles of rotational symmetry must be between 0° and 360°

  • 360° is NOT an angle rotation symmetry.

  • To find the angles of rotation symmetry in a regular polygon, divide 360° by the number of angles (or sides).

  • The number of rotations possible will be one less than the number of angles.
