Setting Goals

Requirements

6

Goals must be SPECIFIC

  • I want to improve my grades

  • vs

  • I want to raise my grades from a C to a B

  • or

  • I want to get an A on Friday's test

7

Goals must be MEASUREABLE

  • How are you going to know you met your goal?

  • I want to do 20 push up

  • I want to do 20 push ups every day this week

  • I want to do be able to do 20 push ups without raising my blood pressure each day in a week.

  • Each of these goals becomes a little more specific and paints a little more what success looks like.

8

Goals must be ATTAINABLE

  • I will run a marathan on Saturday (hahahaha...um not going to happen)

  • What is attainable? What is possible? Still a little bit of a stretch, I want a challenge, but I need to be able to reach it.

  • I will walk two miles on Saturday.

9

Goals need to be Relevant to what I am trying or needing to accomplish

  • I need to get my grades done and posted.

  • I will finish reading the book "I am Number Four" by Friday

  • It is specific, it is measurable, it is attainable (for me--I read a lot), but it doesn't help me get what I want or what I need--it actually interferes :(---Number Four will have to wait.

10

Goals must be Time-Based

  • Begin with an end in mind--when will you know you have completed your goal

  • Developing habits or lifestyles can be goals--how are they time-based if you are not ever planning on ending them--(for example eating at least 2 vegetables a day, exercising everyday, brushing your teeth everyday)

  • Daily habits can be solidified in three months--do something everyday for three months--you have a habit
