What are pronouns?

Pronouns refer to people, places, things and ideas without using their common or proper names.

3 types of personal pronouns:

FIRST-PERSON PERSONAL PRONOUN

• Refer to the person (or people) speaking.

• SINGULAR FIRST-PERSON: I, me, my

• PLURAL FIRST-PERSON: we, our, us

FIRST-PERSON PERSONAL PRONOUN

• We told our story.

• I offered my opinion to the reporters.

• The new family moved next door to us.

SECOND-PERSON PERSONAL PRONOUN

• Refers to the person (or people) spoken to.

• Singular and plural personal pronouns are the same word - YOU

SECOND-PERSON PERSONAL PRONOUN

• This present will be given to you.

• Can you bring the book for me?

THIRD-PERSON PERSONAL PRONOUN

• The person (or people) spoken about.

• SINGULAR THIRD-PERSON: he, him, she, her, it

• PLURAL THIRD-PERSON: they, them

THIRD-PERSON PERSONAL PRONOUN

• They went to school together yesterday.

• It is one of the tallest animals in the world.

• He and she are going to the city this weekend.
