Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone.

Sometimes when reading, you might run across an unfamiliar word. When this occurs, you can use context clues to help determine the meaning of the word. Context clues are hints in a text that can help define a word.
Good readers don't always have to use a dictionary to determine the meaning of a word they don't know
