Intro to Taping

2
Principles of Taping
Used to PREVENT injuries & to keep existing injuries from worsening
ONLY applied if use is indicated
3
Indications for applying tape
provide support & stability
provide immediate first aid
secure a pad/brace
prevent injury
restrict the angle of pull
provide psychological assistance
4
Turf toe
restrict extension of the "great toe"
5
Longitudinal Arch
helps maintain support to the arch
to keep medial foot from flattening
6
Bunions
alleviates pressure on the medial aspect of the toe
7
Closed Basket Weave
give support and help prevent inversion sprains
8
Open Basket Weave
used with acute sprains to minimize swelling when an elastic wrap is not available
9
Achilles Tendon
restricts the amount of dorsiflexion at the ankle
10
Shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome)
reduce pain
watch for Compartment Syndrome
11
Elbow Hyperextension
limit extension
12
Wrist Hyperextension & Hyperflexion
prevent flexion or extension
13
Thumb Hyperextension
prevent extension
14
Multiple Select
When taping, it is important to overlap applications by 1/2 because: (check any that apply)
It provides more support (layers)
It provides more support (adhesion)
Lessens skin irritation
15
Multiple Choice
Since the pre-wrap provides a layer between the tape and the skin, which could allow for slippage and decrease stability, what should you use to help keep the supportive tape job in place?
tape adherent
gauze
more prewrap
16
Multiple Choice
We cannot expect high school kids to shave their arms and legs regularly, if at all...SO, what can we apply to the injured area before applying the adhesive tape?
tape adherent (tuff skin)
gauze
Pre-Wrap
17
Multiple Choice
Why is it important to keep the tape roll in hand while applying tape?
To prevent loose (non-supportive) tape & wrinkles
You don't b/c it leads to continuous taping which leads to constriction
18
Multiple Choice
Non-elastic adhesive tape continuously wrapped around a body part:
will leave excess adhesive residue when removed
immobilizes the joint effectively
will likely cause constriction of blood vessels
19
Multiple Choice
When taping cylindrical parts of the body, where is it best to begin wrapping the tape?
largest part
smallest part
middle, and smooth out evenly each way
20
Multiple Choice
To prevent wrist extension, the crisscross or "fans" should be applied to which side of the wrist?
medial
posterior
anterior
21
Multiple Choice
To prevent wrist flexion, the crisscross or "fans" should be applied to which side of the wrist?
anterior
posterior
lateral
22
Multiple Choice
Which is NOT a reason for using sports taping to an injured limb?
to make it stronger
to increase joint stability
to prevent re-injury
to increase confident
23
Multiple Choice
Below are conditions of the skin that you look for before applying sports taping, EXCEPT
blister
swelling
cleanliness of the skin
tattoo
24
Multiple Choice
What is the first step in sports taping?
Perform evaluation/assessment after taping.
Perform evaluation/assessment before taping.
Perform evaluation/assessment during taping.
Perform evaluation/assessment before and after taping.
