Background information

  • Distinguish meiosis from mitosis

  • Summarize the importance of mycorrhizae

  • Describe the process of succession

  • Describe the meaning of symbiosis

  • Define the term mutualism

3

Distinguish meiosis from mitosis

Mitosis is cell division in which two new cells are formed, each having the same number of chromosomes as the original cell.

In meiosis two cells divisions usually form four new cells, each with half the number of chromosomes as the original.

4

Summarize the importance of mycorrhizae

Thfungi in mycorrhizae are important to plants because they supply minerals to the plant roots

5

Describe the process of succession

In succession, fast growing pioneer species begin to grow first. They make the environment more hospitable for other species, which they are able to grow. Each succeeding wave of new species changes the environment so that other species can grow.

6

Describe the meaning of symbiosis

In symbiosis, two or more species live together in a close relationship that may be beneficial or harmful to one or all of the species.

7

Define the term mutualism

Mutualism is a symbiotic relationship in which both species benefit.

8

Take a minute or two to consider the statements and decide whether you agree or disagree with each. Write your responses on the top portion of your notes.
